Of everything you decorate at a wedding, the mandap works hardest. It is where the pheras happen, where the pandit sits for the longest ritual of the day, where the photographer and videographer park themselves, and where every relative eventually gathers for a picture. The entrance arch gets admired once. The mandap is looked at for hours.

After more than ten years of designing weddings across Ranchi and Jharkhand, we have learnt that the best mandap is rarely the most expensive one. It is the one designed for the venue it stands in, the rituals it has to hold, and the light it will be photographed in. This guide walks through the main styles couples in Ranchi ask for, the flowers that behave well in our climate, and what actually decides the cost.

Before You Pick a Style

  • • Ask your pandit how many people sit inside the mandap and whether a havan kund is used. This decides the minimum size.
  • • Check the ceiling height and any fixed pillars at your venue. Indoor halls in Ranchi vary a lot.
  • • Decide whether the pheras happen in daylight, at dusk or at night. Lighting design changes completely.
  • • Fix the colour palette with your outfits in mind. A red lehenga against a red floral mandap disappears in photos.

Six Mandap Styles That Work in Ranchi

1. Classic Floral Mandap

Four pillars wrapped in fresh flowers, a floral canopy, hanging strings of marigold or jasmine, and a draped ceiling. It is the most requested style for a reason: it photographs beautifully in every light and suits both traditional and contemporary weddings.

Works best for: Lawn and banquet weddings with a traditional ceremony. Watch out for: Flower quantity is the cost driver. A fully covered floral mandap uses several times the flowers of a frame-and-drape design with floral accents.

2. Traditional Red and Gold

Carved or gilded pillars, red and gold drapes, brass urns, banana stems at the entrance, kalash and torans. This is the mandap most families in Jharkhand grew up with, and it holds rituals comfortably because it is designed around them.

Works best for: Families who want the ceremony to look unmistakably traditional, and for indoor venues where drapes hide plain walls. Watch out for: Heavy fabric under hot lights. Ventilation matters for a two-hour ceremony.

3. Pastel and White

White, blush, peach and sage palettes with roses, hydrangea-style blooms, baby's breath and soft sheer drapes. Clean lines, light frames, often with greenery. It flatters bright outfits and looks fresh in daytime photographs.

Works best for: Daytime and dusk ceremonies, especially outdoors. Watch out for: Imported or white flowers wilt faster in heat. For an April or May wedding in Ranchi, your decorator should plan to install late and mist the blooms.

4. Open-Air Lawn Mandap

A low, open structure with a light canopy or none at all, set against the garden or a tree. Marigold strings, hanging lanterns, and a raised platform so guests can see the pheras from the lawn.

Works best for: Winter weddings on Ranchi's marriage lawns, between November and February. Watch out for: Evening dew and wind. Fabric needs weighting and lighting needs to be weatherproof. Keep a rain plan if your date is anywhere near the monsoon.

5. Modern Minimal

Geometric or arched frames in metal or painted wood, a limited flower palette, statement installations instead of all-over florals, and careful lighting. Fewer elements, each one deliberate.

Works best for: Couples who want the ceremony to feel current and want décor that does not compete with their outfits. Watch out for: Minimal is not automatically cheap. Custom frames and good lighting carry their own cost.

6. Themed and Regional

Rajasthani jharokha frames, South Indian temple-style pillars with banana and mango leaves, Bengali alpana motifs, or Jharkhand's own Sohrai and Khovar wall-art patterns used on panels and backdrops. A themed mandap tells a story about the couple or their roots.

Works best for: Weddings where the two families come from different traditions and want both represented. Watch out for: Themes need a decorator who has built them before. Ask to see photographs of the actual structure, not a mood board.

Choosing Flowers for Ranchi's Climate

Ranchi is kinder to flowers than most Indian cities because of its altitude and cooler winters, but the summer and monsoon months still punish delicate blooms. A good decorator picks flowers for the date, not just the palette.

  • ✅ Marigold (genda): The workhorse. Cheap, hardy, available all year and perfect for strings, garlands and massed colour.
  • ✅ Roses: Reliable in winter, need misting and shade in summer. Red, white and pastel varieties are all available locally.
  • ✅ Jasmine (mogra) and tuberose (rajnigandha): Fragrance plus elegance. Best for evening ceremonies when the scent carries.
  • ✅ Orchids and carnations: Hold up well for long ceremonies and add texture to pastel designs.
  • ✅ Greenery and foliage: Fills volume at low cost and keeps a mandap looking fresh longer than flowers alone.
  • ✅ Dried and artificial accents: Useful for heights and ceilings where fresh flowers would wilt or go unseen. Mixed well, nobody notices.

White Horse Events tip: Ask your decorator what time the flowers will be installed. Fresh flowers fixed at noon for a 9 pm ceremony in May will not look the same by the pheras. We schedule floral installation as late as the venue allows.

Lighting: The Half of Mandap Design People Forget

Most pheras in Ranchi happen after dark. Without lighting, a beautiful mandap is a dim shape in the photographs. Three things to settle with your decorator and photographer together:

  • ✅ Warm, even light on the couple from the front, not harsh spots from above that cast shadows on faces.
  • ✅ Backlighting and fairy lights to separate the mandap from the background and add depth.
  • ✅ Smoke and fire safety: the havan sits close to drapes and flowers. Keep fabric clear of the kund and have the venue's fire extinguisher at hand.

What Actually Decides the Cost of a Mandap

Couples often ask for "the price of a mandap" as if it were a fixed item. It is not. Our 2026 wedding cost guide gives overall decoration ranges for Ranchi. Within that, the mandap portion moves up or down with these factors:

Size and height

A mandap for twelve seated people with a havan kund needs a bigger structure, more flowers and more lighting than one for six.

Flower coverage

Fully covered pillars and canopy versus a frame with floral accents is the single biggest swing in price.

Flower type and season

Marigold and local roses cost a fraction of imported blooms. Prices also rise around Diwali and peak wedding dates.

Custom structures

A frame from the decorator's inventory is cheaper than a structure fabricated for your wedding alone.

Lighting and ceiling work

Draped ceilings, chandeliers and layered lighting add labour, rigging and equipment.

Venue access and timing

A venue that allows set-up only on the morning of the wedding needs a larger crew than one that opens the day before.

The practical advice: decide the style and size first, then ask two or three decorators in Ranchi for itemised quotes on the same brief. A quote that lists flowers, structure, lighting and labour separately is one you can compare. A single lump sum is not.

Five Mandap Mistakes We See Every Season

  1. Choosing from a photo of a different venue. A mandap designed for a twenty-foot ceiling looks cramped under a ten-foot one.
  2. Matching the mandap to the bride's outfit exactly. Contrast is what makes the couple stand out in pictures.
  3. Forgetting the back and sides. Guests and the videographer see the mandap from every angle, not just the front.
  4. No space for the rituals. The pandit's samagri, the havan, parents on both sides and the photographer all need room.
  5. Leaving lighting to the venue. Venue floodlights are for safety, not for photographs. Bring your own.

Frequently Asked Questions

The classic floral mandap with marigold or rose covered pillars is the most requested, followed by traditional red and gold for indoor banquet weddings and pastel floral designs for daytime lawn ceremonies.

How big should a wedding mandap be?

Large enough for the couple, both sets of parents, the pandit, the havan kund and ritual items, with room for the photographer to move. Confirm the ritual requirements with your pandit before finalising the structure size.

Which flowers last longest for a mandap in Ranchi?
