In Ranchi, as across Bihar and Jharkhand, the tilak is where a wedding becomes official. The bride's family arrives at the groom's home with a thali, gifts and the men of the household; the groom is seated, blessed and marked with tilak; the two families eat together; and from that afternoon the dates are fixed and the shopping begins in earnest. It is a function with more ritual weight than the engagement and more family politics than the sangeet, and it is almost always organised by the groom's family in a hurry.

White Horse Event Management has planned weddings and pre-wedding functions in Ranchi and Jamshedpur for more than ten years. This guide covers what happens at a tilak, who comes, where to hold it, how to decorate it, what to serve, what goes in the thali, how to photograph it and a timeline that keeps it calm. For the rest of the pre-wedding calendar, see our guides to engagement and ring ceremonies and sangeet, mehndi and haldi.

The Tilak in Five Minutes

  • • Who hosts: the groom's family, at their home or a venue of their choosing.
  • • Who visits: the bride's father, brothers, uncles and close male relatives, and increasingly the women of the family too. The bride herself traditionally does not attend.
  • • What happens: welcome and seating, the pandit's short puja, tilak applied to the groom by the bride's father and relatives, gifts and the thali presented, blessings from elders, and a meal.
  • • How long: the ritual itself takes under an hour; the function, with arrivals and dinner, runs three to four hours.
  • • When: on a muhurat, usually a few days to a few weeks before the wedding. Our shubh muhurat guide lists the popular dates.

How the Tilak Varies by Family

Bihari and Jharkhandi families

The most elaborate version, with the bride's side arriving in a procession, a formal thali, gifts for the groom and his family, and a full meal. Often a large function in its own right, with 100 to 300 guests.

UP and Marwari families

Similar in structure, often combined with the sagai or ring ceremony so that both families' rituals happen on one day. Décor and menu lean traditional.

Punjabi families

The roka or thaka plays the same role: a smaller, more informal gathering at which the families exchange sweets and gifts and the match is announced. Usually held well ahead of the wedding.

Mixed and modern families

Many Ranchi couples now hold a single "tilak and engagement" evening where the tilak ritual opens the function, the ring exchange follows, and both families' guests stay for dinner and a short programme.

Home or Hall: Choosing the Venue

  • ✅ At home, up to 60 guests: the traditional choice and the warmest. A tent over the courtyard or terrace, a decorated seat for the groom, floor and chair seating for elders, and the kitchen or a caterer serving in batches. Parking and a clean washroom matter more than décor.
  • ✅ Small banquet or hotel function room, 60 to 200 guests: comfortable for the visiting family, air-conditioned in summer, with catering in-house. Our banquet hall guide explains what to check.
  • ✅ Lawn, 200 and above or a winter date: an open-air mandap-style setting for the ritual and tented dining. Needs heating in December and January and a rain plan in other months.
  • ✅ Two separate waiting areas. Whatever the venue, the bride's side should have a place to be received and seated with refreshments before the ritual, and the groom's side should be ready to welcome them at the entrance.

White Horse Events tip: Agree the headcount from the bride's side a week in advance and in writing. The most common tilak problem in Ranchi is forty extra guests arriving with the visiting party and the caterer running short.

Décor Ideas for a Tilak

The tilak is a traditional function and the décor should say so. One focal point, a strong entrance and good lighting are enough.

The groom's seat

A decorated chair or low chowki on a small raised platform, with a floral or fabric backdrop behind it. This is where every photograph is taken, so it carries the look.

Marigold and traditional

Marigold strings, mango leaves, banana stems at the entrance, brass urlis with floating flowers and diyas. Rich, auspicious and right for the ritual.

Pastel floral

Blush, peach and ivory roses with greenery, a round or arched backdrop and soft fairy lighting. Popular when the tilak doubles as the engagement.

Entrance and welcome

A floral gate or arch, a welcome board with both families' names, and a tilak-and-garland welcome for the visiting party at the door.

The thali display

A decorated table where the gifts and the thali are placed and photographed before and after the ritual. Families often underplan this and then wish they had the pictures.

Lighting

Warm white lighting on the seat and the dining area, fairy lights or lanterns in the tent, and no harsh overheads. Daytime functions need shade and even light for photographs.

For home functions, our home décor guide has ideas that transfer directly to a tilak courtyard or terrace.

The Thali, Gifts and Shagun

  • ✅ The tilak thali: roli, chawal, a coconut, sweets, dry fruit, and the shagun envelope, arranged on a decorated thali that the bride's father carries in.
  • ✅ Gifts for the groom: clothes, a watch, jewellery or whatever the families have agreed. Presented after the tilak and displayed on the gift table.
  • ✅ Gifts for the groom's family: sarees and clothes for parents and siblings, sweets and dry-fruit boxes. Decided between the families well in advance.
  • ✅ Return gifts for the visiting party: sweets, dry fruit or a small token from the groom's side as the guests leave.
  • ✅ Keep a list. One person from each side records what was given and received. It avoids confusion later and is a tradition in its own right.

The Tilak Menu

  • ✅ Welcome: sherbet, lassi or mocktails on arrival, and a plate of sweets for the visiting party as they are seated.
  • ✅ Chaat and snacks during the ritual for guests who are not in the inner circle: phuchka, dahi puri, paneer tikka, litti with chokha in winter.
  • ✅ Main meal: vegetarian for most families on the ritual day, with puri, two or three sabzis, dal, rice, a paneer dish and a regional favourite. Some families serve non-vegetarian for the dinner afterwards; confirm with both sides.
  • ✅ Sweets counter: khaja, balushahi, rasgulla, gulab jamun, kheer or rabri. The sweets are judged more closely than the mains at a tilak.
  • ✅ Paan and mishri at the exit.
  • ✅ Caterer or halwai: a halwai cooking on site suits home functions; a caterer suits halls. Our catering guide explains how to brief either.

Running Order and Photography

  • ✅ Arrival of the bride's side: welcomed at the gate with tilak, garlands and sherbet, seated with refreshments.
  • ✅ The puja and tilak: the pandit opens, the bride's father applies tilak, followed by brothers and relatives in order of seniority. Fifteen to thirty minutes.
  • ✅ Gifts and thali: presented, photographed and displayed.
  • ✅ Blessings and introductions: elders bless the groom; the families are introduced to each other formally.
  • ✅ Optional programme: a short sangeet-style segment or a family dance if the tilak doubles as the engagement. Keep it under thirty minutes.
  • ✅ Dinner with the visiting party served first, and return gifts as they leave.
  • ✅ Photography brief: the groom's seat, the tilak moment with the bride's father, each relative applying tilak, the thali and gifts, both families together, and the meal. A photographer for three to four hours is enough. See our photography guide.

A Simple Timeline and the Cost Drivers

  • ✅ 3 to 4 weeks before: date fixed with the pandit, home or venue decided, headcount agreed between the families, gifts list settled.
  • ✅ 2 weeks before: décor confirmed, caterer or halwai booked with the menu, photographer booked, invitations sent to the groom's side.
  • ✅ 1 week before: thali and gifts purchased and packed, final headcount reconfirmed, return gifts ordered, pandit's requirements collected.
  • ✅ Day before: tent and décor set up, seating arranged, sound set-up tested, thali display table ready.
  • ✅ On the day: caterer in by mid-morning, family dressed and at the gate an hour before the visiting party, and one person from each side holding the gift list.

What drives the cost

  • ✅ Venue: home is free to hire; a hall or lawn adds a charge or a minimum spend.
  • ✅ Catering: headcount multiplied by menu standard; the sweets counter is where families upgrade.
  • ✅ Décor: the groom's seat and backdrop are the base; a floral entrance, tent lighting and a lawn mandap add to it.
  • ✅ Photography, sound and return gifts: smaller lines that add up.
  • ✅ Our quotations list every item separately. For how the tilak sits within the whole wedding budget, see our wedding cost guide for Ranchi.

Frequently Asked Questions

Tilak Ceremony — Ranchi

What is a tilak ceremony and who hosts it?

+

The tilak is the pre-wedding function in which the bride's family formally accepts the groom. The bride's father, brothers and male relatives visit the groom's home or venue, apply tilak to his forehead, present gifts and a thali, and the two families share a meal. In Bihar, Jharkhand and much of North India it is hosted by the groom's family, with the bride's side as the visiting party.

When is the tilak held in relation to the wedding?

+

Traditionally a few days to a few weeks before the wedding, on a date fixed with the family pandit. Many Ranchi families now hold it two to four weeks ahead so that out-of-town relatives can attend without a second trip, or combine it with the engagement or ring ceremony on the same day.

Should we hold the tilak at home or in a hall?

+

Under sixty guests, the groom's home with a tent in the courtyard or on the terrace is the most traditional and intimate choice. Above that, or when the bride's side is travelling and the two families want a proper dinner, a small banquet hall, a hotel function room or a lawn in winter is more comfortable.

What should be on a tilak menu?

+

A vegetarian or sattvik spread is usual for the ritual day, with regional favourites such as litti chokha, puri and sabzi, dahi chura in winter, chaat and a strong sweets counter with khaja, balushahi, rasgulla and kheer. Many families now add a live counter or two. Keep the menu light if the function is in the afternoon.

Does White Horse Events plan tilak ceremonies?

+

Yes. White Horse Event Management plans tilak, engagement and all pre-wedding functions in Ranchi and Jamshedpur, including venue, décor, catering coordination, seating for the two sides, photography and on-the-day management, either as a standalone function or as part of full wedding planning.
